Meet Carmen

I am Carmen Orozco, a proud mother of three amazing children—two of whom are currently attending ASU and a sixth grader in the Avondale Elementary School District.

My husband, Geovanni, is a dedicated principal in the Avondale Elementary School District.

We have called the West Valley home for more than decade, first settling in Litchfield Park and now living near our favorite Target in Goodyear.

Throughout my career, I have been dedicated to transforming education for all students, with a focus on those from marginalized communities.

Growing up as an honors student in Los Angeles, my path seemed bright until a sudden move to Tennessee upended my life. Faced with bullying and racism in a new environment, I struggled to find my footing. Before my senior year, I convinced my mom to move us to Phoenix, where I graduated on time against all odds.

My Journey and Professional Experience

As an education consultant with a national nonprofit, I lead efforts in recruiting and training diverse educators and championing equitable education policies. In my role, I have successfully implemented diversity training programs that have improved teacher retention by 20% in schools serving marginalized communities. My involvement in various leadership initiatives has honed my ability to confront systemic injustices and spearhead meaningful change. With a robust educational background and extensive professional experience, I am well-prepared to serve our community as a proactive and impactful school board member.

Living in Arizona with my husband, Geovanni, a principal in the Avondale Elementary School District, and our three children, I've seen firsthand the triumphs and challenges within our education system. Our family's journey has deepened my passion for advocating for all students. I’m committed to fostering an inclusive and equitable education environment that reflects the diversity and resilience of our community.

Vision and Goals as a School Board Member

As a school board member, my top priorities will be:

Improving Student Outcomes: Ensuring that our students have diverse post-graduation choices and raising accountability for student proficiency rates.

Recruiting and Retaining High-Quality and Diverse Teachers: Securing competitive wages for teachers, supporting their professional development, and fostering partnerships with local colleges and nonprofits.

Increasing Parent Engagement and Advocacy Efforts: Incorporating the voices of students, families, and the community in decision-making and championing policies that reflect our unique needs.

Supporting Comprehensive Career and Technical Education (CTE) Programs: Enhancing our Academies model to provide more robust CTE opportunities.
